Helping children with special needs achieve their potential
Shoba Ramanathan, RMT
For more than 20 years, I have worked as a music therapist specializing in music therapy for children with special needs. I have worked as a consultant with several organizations and schools that deal with special needs. In addition, I established and ran my own private practice in music therapy. I have worked with a variety of individuals with disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, Rett syndrome, Cognitive Developmental Delay as well as different types of physical impairments. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from Western Illinois University. I also successfully completed an AMTA (American Music Therapy Association) approved clinical internship at the Central Wisconsin Center (CWC) in Madison, Wisconsin.
I use music as a primary tool in my sessions to connect and engage each child. Each session provides live interactive music making between the therapist and the client. I utilize a variety of percussion instruments in addition to the piano in each session. Each instrument is used with a specific goal to develop skills and address any existing challenges that the client may have. Development in the following life skill areas can be individualized for each child: Gross and fine motor skills, communication, eye hand coordination and coordinated movements. Client needs and interests are the focus of our work together. I enjoy working closely with parents to help establish goals for their child’s unique needs.
