A few months back with no idea of what music therapy would be or would do for our son, our family went to meet Shoba. We are really grateful to have found her!

She has amazingly structured sessions to explore various instruments, sounds and rhythm. Her sessions not only help learn music/rhythm/sounds it helps the child to focus, listen and improve their fine/gross motor skills, attention span and behavior. We are seeing a lot of good things happening to our little one with Shoba’s continued focus and patience. Through music, she has established a sense of accomplishment for our son. Also I should definitely mention her penning down a detailed summary after every session. This gives us the complete picture of why she is doing an activity and what the child learns from it. With this we learn a lot. Each activity is tailored to cater to every child’s needs. She also shares various suggestions and strategies to handle behavior in various scenarios.

If you are considering introducing music to your child, I would highly recommend this passionate and warm therapist.

Ms. Shoba is amazing! My son was very interested in playing a keyboard and his challenges make it difficult to take traditional piano lessons. So, initially I was only looking for a piano teacher that would work with special needs kiddos, and a friend suggested Shoba. When I had my consultation I was impressed by her approach and realized there was a lot more for my son to gain from her music therapy than just learning the piano! She uses multiple instruments and methods to work on attention, focus, behavior and self esteem.

My son has enjoyed learning the Ukulele in addition to the piano, and working on his 'singing voice' (not screaming voice). ;) There are also plenty of fun sensory type instruments that he enjoys. His sessions have taught him to try and have patience, and not get frustrated with himself so easily. It has also improved his self esteem and given him a sense of accomplishment. He actually wants to practice at home every day!

His favorite thing is watching the videos she sends us after the lessons. We always get a detailed email that goes over everything they work on, what his challenges were, and how he can work on overcoming those challenges. It's really helpful to be able to review the email with him every week and have a discussion about it.

I would highly recommend Shoba to anyone with a special kiddo!

Shoba provides an incredible service to the special needs community. Her ability to connect with individuals through music therapy is very unique. It's easy to see that her techniques are full of purpose, and they better the life of the individual. If you are looking to place your child or family member in a music therapy program, please consider Shoba's services! Her demeanor is gentle and welcoming, but she is also able to help her clients work through challenging emotions and overstimulation. She is a true professional!

We were interested in starting music therapy for our 3-year old son because he loves music. While he is able to experiment with different musical sounds and intruments, his ability to attend and focus has also improved as a result of Shoba’s structured sessions, which are tailored to our son’s specific needs. She also provides thorough analysis of each session and has given tips to help with behavior at home whenever asked. Shoba is experienced and very professional; we highly recommend to any family of a child with special needs! She clearly has a passion for this special population. Our family is so lucky to have found her!

My daughter's focus has tremendously improved since we started her music therapy. I truely appreciate Shoba's passion and dedication and the ease with which she handles kids. It's not just the kid but even I learn a lot from her each session.

Of all the therapists I have come across so far, you are the most distinguished Shoba. I feel blessed to have found you :)

Shoba Ramanathan has been working with our daughter, Raina, and has absolutely helped her in so many areas. Speech, fine motor skills, behavior, reducing impulsive behaviors, listening, problem solving, attention span, patience, focus... It has been truly amazing to see how much this has helped her---I was skeptical. This has been one of the best things we have done for Raina. I recommend Shoba, she's a great music therapist.

At the age of 3, Arif (who has autism), started off unresponsive to music therapy. Shoba patiently used a variety of instruments to coax him into exploring music. After many sessions, Arif eventually learned to engage with her. It was through these therapies that Arif discovered he has a sense of rhythm and developed an appreciation for music. It has been a heartwarming journey for him because music opened up his world and provided him with an outlet for personal enjoyment. Now at 20, Arif is very keen on learning to play the guitar, keyboard and drums. The exposure to music has given him invaluable experience and has contributed towards his personal growth and self esteem.

When Jee Shuen was 2 ½ he was diagnosed with Autism. He had sensory processing difficulties which included hearing. I was told by the OT that he had a problem filtering out background noise which was causing him to overload and shut out everything. He couldn’t respond to his name, even when we were standing right next to him. When Jee Shuen turned 4 we started music therapy with Shoba. After about 2 months of weekly classes, I noticed an improvement in his focus and attention towards different noises. He began responding to his name more often! I decided to continue the therapy with Shoba because Jee Shuen was enjoying every class. He learned to play some simple tunes on the keyboard! Shoba worked her magic with Jee Shuen, keeping him focused and interested. Thanks to Shoba and her sessions, Jee Shuen learned to focus on sounds and listen to instructions. This is an important skill he needs for his learning journey ahead. After Shoba moved to the United States, Jee Shuen and I have missed her sessions!

Our son Kevin started music therapy with Shoba when he was 5. Kevin is autistic and hyperactive but we didn’t want to put him on meds to reduce his hyperactivity. That was a new beginning for our Kevin. Music therapy for my non-verbal child was challenging but Shoba somehow managed to teach him rhythm, tempo and tone. He calmed down a lot and could relate to music. We are very proud to say that Kevin played keyboard, with a key lighting system, at a friend’s wedding. Kevin also performed at a music marathon for special children and the parents were impressed.

"My son Syamdzir, or JJ as he calls himself, was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be accepted under Shoba's tutelage and guidance. He had attended weekly Music Therapy sessions with Shoba faithfully for close to 5 years since he was 8 years old. He looked forward immensely to the sessions and it was the only session that he always appeared eager to attend. Clearly the weekly sessions with Shoba helped him calm and control his Autism and profound ADHD. It gave him the avenue and channel to explore and express his creativity and sense of rhythm, in addition to instilling an understanding of structure, discipline, decorum and behavior...all important skills to manage for a highly hyperactive, impulsive and inattentive boy like JJ. Shoba understood his needs and handled him with a firm, but gentle and tolerant manner. We were all extremely sad when she had to relocate to the US, and despite it already being over 3 years now, JJ still remembers his teacher Shoba fondly, which is also astonishing for a boy who can seldom remember where he puts his stuff. Shoba has instilled and inculcated in him an understanding and love of music, melody, rhythm and beats which JJ still continues to experience and explore till this day. We are thankful to Shoba for her impact on JJ's life. Sending him to her for Music Therapy was one of the best decisions we had ever made as JJ's parents, and we strongly recommend others to do too. All the best to Shoba, and good luck to all parents."
